What To Know About The Standard Length Of A Dissertation

How long is my dissertation supposed to be? This is an obvious question that you will ask yourself sooner or later. Unfortunately, there is no good answer to this question. Everybody will say to you that a paper of this level is about quality, not quantity. As soon as you have covered all the depths of the research topic and contributed something new to the existing knowledge in the field, you’ve done a good job, and the number of pages or word limit don’t matter. However, there are still some factors that determine the length of your project, and you should be aware of them.

  • The academic level.
  • The academic level you are in is the key factor affecting the standard length of a dissertation. An undergraduate paper usually consists of 10,000 – 12,000 words while a postgraduate piece will consist of 15,000 – 25,000 words. If you are working on a PhD project, make sure to cover the topic and present your findings in at least 50,000 words.

  • The university requirements.
  • The standards for the length of a dissertation differ in different institutions. Some universities don’t specify how many words your paper should consist of. Your work should be long enough to provide an adequate defense of your research. However, there are institutions that demand a minimal word count for the projects of their undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and doctoral candidates. These standards may vary in different departments within the same school. Turn to your advisor to learn the specific length requirements and stick to them.

  • Your field and type of research.
  • If you are doing your project in social sciences, humanities, or education, it is likely to be lengthy. Your PhD work in any of these fields may consist of more than 80,000 words. On the contrary, the standard PhD paper in science, technology, or engineering is about 40,000 words. The length of your final copy is also influenced by the type of your research. If you back up your ideas with quantitative data, your thesis is likely to be shorter. However, a qualitative study is bulkier since it is usually based on a detailed literature review. This is where you should synthesize all relevant theories in the field, consequently increasing the length of your project.

If your advisor leaves it to you to decide how long your dissertation should be, don’t worry and just do what you should do. Your paper should take as many words as it is necessary to achieve your objectives.
