Dissertation Hypothesis Writing – The Ultimate Tutorial

To write a good dissertation hypothesis, you must first understand what it is. A hypothesis is a statement that predicts the results you will obtain from the research you are undertaking. As a doctoral student, you will be expected to defend that hypothesis throughout your writing process. The outcome of your defense will determine whether you graduate or not.

  • Writing the Hypothesis
  • The hypothesis is always written before you collect data or even analyze it. Ensure that your hypothesis can be tested. As such, it must contain independent variables that you can control dependent variables that will be measured or observed alongside the independent ones. These statements should be short and straight to the point. This enables you to provide answers in your paper. For instance, you may choose a hypothesis that “Consumption of media violence escalates aggression.” In this case, consumption of media violence becomes the independent variable while aggression becomes the dependent.

  • Types of Hypotheses
  • Your dissertation is supposed to create two hypotheses. One is the research hypothesis which is your actual statement and will guide your work throughout the paper. The other is referred to as a null hypothesis because it is meant to negate what you had said. At the end of your paper, your results must confirm either of the two hypotheses. Your finding should confirm or disapprove the existence of a relationship between your independent and dependent variables.

The null hypothesis is supposed to directly test the assertion with the aim of delivering a negative result. This means that the research or alternative hypothesis tests and approves the existence of a positive relationship. You may also have a one-tailed hypothesis that is specific on the direction or results or a two-tailed hypothesis that does not indicate a specific direction but only points at variation or change.

  • Testing Your Hypothesis
  • Your data is supposed to exhaust all possibilities when working on your hypothesis. At the end of your work, your results will either reveal the relationship between the dependent and independent variables or disapprove the existence of that relationship. Once the relationship is established, the research or alternate hypothesis is adopted as true meaning that you will reject the null hypothesis. In case your data reveals otherwise, the null hypothesis will have carried the day and will therefore be adopted.

To complete your dissertation successfully, the hypothesis must be clear, brief and testable. The relationship between variables must also be logical and relevant. In case you experience more trouble with your paper, consult your supervisor or your committee members.
